I have been reading over status updates, blog posts, and just information in general about woman who are not in their teenage years or early twenties anymore, but still want to have babies. So I decided to do some research and see what I could find out on PCOS and what it does to our bodies as we age.
I found some good news and some not so good stuff. I am going to share it all with you. Keep up the hope and don't give up if it is something that you really want.
The bad news
- PCOS does Not disappear as women get older
- Male hormones climb fairly sharply with age
-This causes the worsening of symptoms such as:
- extra hair growth
- diabetes and cardiovascular symptoms could become more problematic
- DHEAS levels do not become normal until 20 years after menopause.
- Hirsutism symptoms such as unwanted hair growth and balding worsens with aging
-Metabolic parameters worsen, putting women with PCOS at increased risks for life long health issues beyond menopause.
If you are like me you read that and went ok... my symptoms are going to get worse as I age and there is no hope of ever having any relief from PCOS. Don't get to discouraged. There are some good things to come from this.
The good news
- Some sex hormones and menstrual cycles eventually get better for women with PCOS as they age
-Older women with PCOS reported less hot flashes and sweats while going through menopause
-by the age of 61 testosterone levels will be back to normal in women with PCOS.
- Women with PCOS reach menopause later in life
-As the androgen levels decrease with age women's cycles become more regular
- Women with PCOS who are in their early 30's seem to have more regular cycles
-this suggests that women with PCOS will have a better chance of conceiving as they get older.
Now not every one would look at the good news and think that it is good news. But for those of you ladies who are not in their teens or twenties it is nice to know that there is hope as you get older to have children. Its all about finding what treatment works for you.
Please remember that if you are going through treatments right now and they are not working for you, tell your doctor. Talk to them about different treatment plans and find one that does work for you. If your doctor isnt willing to change your treatment plan do research on your own and try different things. There are so many different treatment plans out there that you can try until you find that one that works for you. Ask questions, make your voice be heard, if the doctor still isnt listening it may be time to find one that will if it is something you are able to do.
Best wishes to each and everyone of you!
